If you want to maximize nostalgia, you should try reading the Pokémon Adventure manga (Poke Special in JP) during your Emerald Arc! Despite Gold/Silver being my fav, the Ruby/Sapphire volumes have best story imo. It's SO good

I have two well three pokemon in this generation that i like one is the weather contolling Pokemon, then i think one you encounter later nincada which leaves a gift when it evolves with an empty party slot(thats the third one.)
